Vintage report 2020

The "Lockdown" Solar Benchmark

The 2020 vintage was defined by extreme early maturation; it was the earliest harvest on record for many, with some picking starting as early as August 16. Despite a hot, dry summer, the wines are a technical marvel because they do not "taste" hot.

 * The Profile: The reds are incredibly deep in color with high levels of anthocyanins and refined tannins. Unlike the jammy 2019s, the 2020s have a "cool" fruit profile—think black cherry and blueberry rather than roasted plum. The whites are stellar, possessing a surprising "zip" of tartaric acidity that balances their natural richness.

 * Regional Note: The Côte de Nuits excelled with Pinot Noir that shows massive aging potential. In the Côte de Beaune, the wines are slightly more muscular and "black-fruited" than usual. It is a vintage built for the long haul.
