The "Ladybug" Vintage

  • Reputation: Controversial. A massive crop followed the heatwave of 2003, resulting in a return to classicism, but one marred by "GM" (Green Meanies).

  • Red (Cote de Nuits & Beaune): Many reds suffered from a distinct vegetal, peppery aroma attributed to a ladybug infestation during harvest (releasing pyrazines into the ferment). While top terroirs in Gevrey-Chambertin showed well, many wines remained "lean" and herbaceous.

  • White: Far superior to the reds. They are precise, high-acid, and classic.

  • Current Status: Drink up. The reds are largely fading or holding onto their herbaceous edge; the whites are at peak or slightly past.
