Vintage report 2005

The Modern Legend

  • Reputation: Near-perfect. A dry, sunny year with no rot and perfect ripening. It is considered one of the greatest vintages in history for Red Burgundy.

  • Red (Cote de Nuits): Exceptional. These are "monumental" wines with massive structure, deep fruit, and high tannins. Gevrey-Chambertin and Vosne-Romanée produced wines that can age for 40+ years.

  • Red (Cote de Beaune): Also superb, though the tannins in Pommard and Corton can still be quite "stern" and require more time.

  • White: Rich and powerful, though some lack the "zip" of 2004 or 2007.

  • Current Status: Cellar. The Grand Crus and top Premier Crus are only just beginning to open up.
