Vintage report 2001

The Terroir Specialist

  • Reputation: A difficult growing season (hail in the Cote de Beaune) resulted in a "classicist's vintage." The wines are leaner and more "transparent" to their terroir than the 1999s.

  • Red (Cote de Nuits): Excellent. Gevrey-Chambertin and Nuits-Saint-Georges produced structured, savory wines with great mineral tension.

  • Red (Cote de Beaune): Volnay and Pommard were hit hard by hail; quality is variable. The best examples are "stony" and elegant.

  • White: High acidity and great definition. Like 1999, watch for premox, but the balance was technically superb.

  • Current Status: Drinking well. These wines have "shaken off" their youthful austerity and are very food-friendly now.
