Vintage report 2018
The "Gourmand" Heatwave
2018 was a outlier: it was a record-breaking hot and dry year, yet it produced a massive crop. Usually, heat leads to small berries, but 2018 gave growers plenty of juice. This is a vintage of power, high alcohol (some hitting 15%), and intense fruit concentration.
• The Profile: The reds are "dark"—think blackcurrant, plum, and spice. They are muscular with ripe, velvety tannins. Because of the heat, some whites can feel "fat" or "heavy" if picked too late, but the best examples have a surprising stony backbone.
• Regional Note: The Côte de Beaune generally outperformed the Nuits for reds in this specific year, with Volnay and Pommard showing incredible richness. For whites, Meursault's naturally rich style paired well with the solar year, though acidity can be lower than average across the board. .
